Malayalam Spotlight: I, Nobody — Prithviraj's Tightest Thriller Yet

Director Nissam Basheer made Rorschach and Kettyolaanu Ente Malakha. Both were genre films that played against expectation. I, Nobody does the same thing, except this time the premise is almost cruelly simple. Rajeevan is a government clerk. Nobody special. One morning, he wakes up to the news that he masterminded a ₹17-crore bank robbery. He did not do it. But the internet has already decided he did.

Prithviraj Sukumaran plays Rajeevan — and the key choice here is that Rajeevan does not turn superheroic. He does not become a vigilante. He is a frightened, ordinary man trying to prove a negative inside a machine that has no interest in his innocence. Parvathy Thiruvothu, Hakkim Shahjahan, and Vijayaraghavan round out a strong cast. Jakes Bejoy and Harshavardhan Rameshwar co-compose the score. It drops on JioHotstar on August 25 in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.

Deep Dive: The Whisper Man (Netflix, Aug 28)

This is the one the algorithm will be pushing hard all weekend. The Whisper Man is based on Alex North's 2019 thriller novel that spent weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. The story follows a widowed crime novelist (Adam Scott) who moves with his young son to a small English town to restart their life after grief. Except the town has a history. A convicted serial killer known as "The Whisper Man" — because he whispered to his victims through their bedroom windows before taking them — is already in prison.

Then the novelist's son is abducted. And the patterns match. The father calls in the one person who knows more about The Whisper Man than anyone alive: his estranged, retired detective father (Robert De Niro). Michael Keaton and Michelle Monaghan round out the cast. The film is directed by New Zealand filmmaker James Ashcroft and produced by the Russo Brothers (the directors of Avengers: Endgame) through their AGBO banner. It has all the ingredients of a Netflix winter event film — except it is arriving in August, which is unusual.

Deep Dive: Mousetrap (Netflix, Aug 28) 🇰🇷

Netflix's Korean content machine does not stop. Mousetrap is directed by Kim Hong Seon — the same director behind The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil, which became a sleeper hit on the platform. This one is adapted from a Kakao webtoon called Field Mouse by the writer Ludovico.

The premise is compact and efficient. Reclusive novelist Moon-jae (Jun-yeol Ryu) is living in deliberate isolation when a mysterious figure named "Field Mouse" begins dismantling his life from the outside. To fight back, Moon-jae forms an unlikely alliance with No-ja (Kyung-gu Sul), a ruthless loan shark with his own reasons to want Field Mouse gone. The third lead is Sun-yong (Kyoo-hyung Lee), who connects both threads. Korean thrillers in this mold — two men from opposite worlds forced together — tend to perform extremely well globally. Add Kim Hong Seon's track record and this is one of the higher-probability bets on the platform this week.

Deep Dive: The Shards (JioHotstar, Aug 26)

Ryan Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis — the creator of American Horror Story and the author of American Psycho — in the same room is either a masterpiece or a disaster, with very little room in between. The Shards is based on Ellis's 2023 autofiction novel, set in 1980s Los Angeles among wealthy prep school teenagers. There is a serial killer active in the city. The teenage narrator begins noticing a new, deeply unsettling classmate. The book was simultaneously a coming-of-age story, a thriller, and a meditation on nostalgia and sexual confusion.

The series stars Igby Rigney, with Homer Gere (son of Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford) and Kaia Gerber (daughter of Cindy Crawford) in supporting roles. It is Murphy at his most stylized — which means it will look extraordinary and may or may not make complete sense by the final episode. It drops August 26 on JioHotstar.

Babita Singh Reporting: The Quiet Surprise of the Week

Do not sleep on this one. Babita Singh Reporting arrives on Prime Video on August 28. The premise sounds like a standard investigative thriller: a suspended police officer in a small town decides to unofficially investigate the murder of her childhood friend. But the lead is Malayalam actress Nimisha Sajayan, who was extraordinary in The Great Indian Kitchen and has had a remarkable run of quietly devastating performances. This is her first major Hindi film as the lead.

Director Ambiecka Pandit keeps the stakes personal — this is not a procedural, it is a story about grief and the things we cannot let go. Barun Sobti and Anshumaan Pushkar co-star. At a time when most OTT films mistake scale for quality, this one looks like it earns its runtime the hard way.

Tamil Spotlight: Anbe Diana (SonyLIV, Aug 28)

Set in the Tamil-Telugu border neighbourhood of Perambur in Chennai, Anbe Diana is a cross-community romantic comedy. A Telugu-speaking young man from a conservative family falls for an Anglo-Indian woman named Diana. The cultural collision — language, religion, food, family expectations — is the film's engine. Director-lead Pari Elavazhagan leans into the comedy of miscommunication rather than softening the edges.

Roja Selvamani and Chetan are in supporting roles. It arrives in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi on SonyLIV on August 28. If you are looking for something lighter amid all the thrillers this week, this is it.

Dilon Ki Ram Leela launches August 24 on ZEE5 — a contemporary Hindi drama about Leela, a privileged young woman unloved by her wealthy father, who finds unexpected warmth in Ram, her father's hardworking aide. It is a class-and-love story from Ekta Kapoor's stable. Mishkat Varma and Aastha Sharma lead, with Eijaz Khan in the supporting cast.

Meanwhile, the original Kyunki... Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi... already dropped yesterday (August 23) on JioHotstar with Smriti Irani returning as Tulsi after two decades. The nostalgia factor is enormous.
