August 2026. An IT professional in Bengaluru opens his mutual fund portfolio. The SIP he started five years ago has grown to over ₹9 lakh — a solid start. But the mid-cap fund that carried a top rating back in 2021 now sits at rank 52 within its own category. He doesn't know this. That gap — between the assumption that a fund is "still doing well" and its actual peer-relative performance — is one of the most common and costly blind spots in Indian retail investing. Filling that gap is exactly what Bengaluru-based startup PowerUp Money set out to do in 2024.

What Is PowerUp Money?

PowerUp Money (Uniorbit Wealth Management Pvt Ltd) is a SEBI-Registered Investment Advisor — registration number INA000019798. The app imports a user's existing mutual fund portfolio via PAN in read-only mode, then assesses the health of each fund: which are performing well relative to peers, which are underperforming, and which deserve an exit. The recommendations are data-driven, commission-free, and built on over 20 years of historical fund data.

The company was founded by Prateek Jindal — an IIM Mumbai alumnus with 11+ years of fintech experience. Since its 2024 launch, PowerUp Money has raised $19.1 million (approximately ₹160 crore), backed by Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia India), Accel, Blume Ventures, and Kae Capital. By mid-2026: 11 lakh+ users, ₹1,80,000 crore+ AUM tracked, 4.9/5 app rating across 9,000+ reviews.

Three Terms You Need to Understand First

Power Rank — A fund's rank within its own SEBI category, using 20+ years of historical data. Rank 38 in the Nifty 100 category means 37 funds scored better.

Elite Score (CRV) — Three sub-scores: Consistency (outperformance frequency across rolling periods), Recency (current momentum), and Volatility (downside protection vs peers). Together they go deeper than trailing-return star ratings.

Power Select — Side-by-side fund comparison with Power Rank, Elite Score, AUM trend, and quartile color-coding. Elite members get an "in-form funds only" filter.

The CRV Methodology: Why It's Different from Star Ratings

Consistency measures how frequently a fund outperforms its category average across multiple rolling periods — not just one good year.

Recency captures current momentum: is this fund in form right now, or drifting? Deterioration shows here before it appears in 3Y trailing returns.

Volatility measures downside protection relative to category peers during market corrections.

The precise mathematical weightings are proprietary. The CRV framework structure is confirmed in official blog posts, but independent verification of the exact formula is not possible.

Three Things Not to Confuse About PowerUp Money Elite

  1. PowerUp Money is not a trading platform. To invest, you still need Zerodha Coin, Kuvera, Groww, or Navi. Direct MF execution is not yet live.
  2. Power Rank ≠ CRISIL / Value Research star ratings. CRV produces different results — a 5-star fund elsewhere may rank mid-table on Power Rank. They measure different things.
  3. Elite is not a 1:1 personal financial advisor. For planning around your tax bracket, goals, and risk capacity, a licensed advisor is still the right call.

Strengths and Limitations at a Glance

Strengths

  • SEBI RIA registered — regulated, commission-free
  • ₹999/yr flat — ~95% cheaper than traditional RIA fees
  • CRV goes deeper than trailing-return star ratings
  • Rank Trend catches fund deterioration early
  • Tax-efficient rebalancing optimises capital gains
  • 4.9/5 rating; 11 lakh+ users; Peak XV + Accel-backed

Limitations

  • CRV weightings proprietary — no independent audit possible
  • Direct MF execution not yet live
  • Goal-based allocation tool still upcoming
  • Annual plan only — no monthly option
  • Research tool only; investing still needs a separate platform
  • Portfolios under ₹2 lakh may find free tier sufficient

Do You Actually Need Elite?

Investors with a portfolio under ₹2 lakh will likely find the free tier adequate. But for anyone above ₹5 lakh, identifying even one underperforming fund — switching it from a regular to a direct plan — can recover the ₹999 cost many times over in a single year. The Indian mutual fund market has 1,500+ active schemes; SEBI data confirms top-quartile performers frequently slip to the bottom quartile three years later. PowerUp Money Elite is a portfolio X-ray machine: it surfaces what trailing return charts obscure. At ₹999 a year — the cost of a mid-range restaurant dinner — the barrier to trying it is low. A 7-day free trial is available for one fund category before committing.
