The most anticipated Kannada film in years limped out of theatres after underperforming against its enormous budget — and now arrives on ZEE5 for the streaming verdict. Set in Portuguese-ruled Goa post-Independence, Toxic follows the rise and catastrophic unravelling of Raya, a gangster across decades of violence, with a third-act twist that critics called either brave or baffling: Raya's supposed son Ticket is revealed as a dissociated alter ego, the real Ticket having died years ago. The film is really about toxic masculinity as a self-consuming myth.

What critics agreed on: Yash and Kiara Advani's performances are genuinely committed, the visual scale is staggering, and a few set pieces are legitimately stunning. Where it collapsed: the screenplay is too thin for its 192-minute runtime, the symbolism is heavy-handed, and the film's ambition constantly outruns its execution. Rotten Tomatoes has it at just 21%, with the critical consensus landing around "visually impressive but hollowed out." Audiences who went in expecting a Pushpa-style crowd thriller were especially disappointed.

The streaming version is the right place to judge it honestly. At home, at your own pace, the film's genuine visual accomplishments and committed central performances have more room to breathe. Fatima Sana Shaikh plays a lawyer who takes the girl's case. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub plays the cult leader — a role that reportedly required months of preparation and has already drawn comparisons to Manoj Bajpayee at his most controlled. The film that critics are calling "the most thrilling Netflix original in years" makes one central, disturbing argument: the Harvard psychologist who subjected young Ted Kaczynski to months of dehumanising psychological experiments in the 1950s helped, perhaps directly, to create the Unabomber. Jacob Tremblay plays the young Kaczynski at Harvard. Russell Crowe plays Dr. Henry Murray — charming, brilliant, sadistic. Shailene Woodley plays the FBI agent hunting the Unabomber decades later as his package bombs kill across America.

The dual-timeline structure — experiment and consequence, crime and investigation — gives director Janus Metz Pedersen (Borg vs McEnroe) the architecture to build an essay on how institutions manufacture violence. Crowe in particular is reported to be giving one of the best performances of his career — a villain who believes he is helping science while destroying a mind. A genuinely important film about America's relationship with institutional cruelty.

McConaughey and Harrelson play exaggerated fictional versions of themselves — two movie stars living as neighbours on McConaughey's Texas ranch after Harrelson's daughter's wedding falls spectacularly apart. Then a DNA test suggests they might genuinely be biological brothers. The premise mirrors real-life: both actors have publicly discussed 23andMe results showing shared DNA, and McConaughey wrote about it in his memoir. Habeebi is the most talked-about Tamil release of the week among critics. Set in 1980s southern Tamil Nadu in a handloom-weaving Muslim community, it tells the story of a young man falling in love with his cousin — a love separated by family, tradition, and an era that had no vocabulary for what they felt. Photographer sends a troubled photographer into Mathikettan Solai forest to chase a rare atmospheric phenomenon, and then blurs the line between survival and hallucination. FilmiBeat calls it "visually atmospheric, engaging if not entirely original." Angikaaram, on Sun NXT, combines a 200-metre runner's journey with a legal fight for justice — a combination that sounds unlikely but has received warm reviews for its lead performance.

Agadha follows a spiritually gifted woman who investigates her cousin's sudden death, discovers a forbidden forest cave, and confronts an ancient dark entity. FilmiBeat calls it "ambitious mythological thriller with real atmosphere, though its genre-blending doesn't fully land." Director Viveka keeps the runtime at a lean 95 minutes. At under two hours, this may deliver exactly the contained, propulsive crime drama that Toxic promised but couldn't quite achieve at three hours and twelve minutes.
