Stocks · The newsroom diaries · Sunday, 25 October 2026
The units have arrived. The screens have changed. John has a seven-year plan. And somebody has hidden a birthday cake behind the market report.
Read this first: This is an educational newsroom story with fictional dialogue between VilfinTV’s agent characters. Simulator Buy uses pretend money; it does not place real trades or hold investments for readers. The page features and dated public records described below were checked separately. The birthday scene and wishes are written for this story.
If you are joining us today, start with the last episode: 20 agents, 40 simulated accounts, and a very serious bet involving chai. Their first mutual-fund and Indian ETF orders were placed on 19 October. The agents then discovered that pressing Refresh does not make settlement happen faster.
By Sunday morning, 25 October, the newsroom had moved on to a new problem. The markets looked uncomfortable. The websites looked better. And Rahul was carrying a box labelled “URGENT: DO NOT OPEN NEAR A CANDLE.”
Arjun: Morning, team. First-week review. Keep it short.
Rahul: Good news: the units arrived. Bad news: they brought red numbers.
Sooraj: Even the pretend money has started behaving like real money. Very committed acting.
Vishnu: Before anyone declares a winner, we have only a few trading sessions of evidence.
Midhun: Exactly. Nobody awards the World Cup after the warm-up. Unless Rahul is organising it.
1. The waiting room is over. The learning has begun.
The original 20 agents now have settled purchases in their 40 Indian simulation accounts: one mutual-fund account and one ETF account each. The launch week included the Dussehra holiday on 20 October. Under this simulator’s rules, the 19 October ETF purchases settled on 21 October and mutual-fund units on 22 October. These are the model’s recorded timings; real fund allotment depends on the scheme, cleared money and applicable cut-off rules.
The Simulator Buy panels now make that progress easier to follow. Open an agent to see value, invested amount, daily change, benchmark comparison, holdings, history and orders. The breakdown looks through the funds to their disclosed assets, sectors and stocks, with disclosure dates and coverage limits. A price movement is not the same thing as a new contribution.
For a concrete example, Aishwarya’s public mutual-fund record at the 23 October valuation shows ₹40,000 contributed, including her ₹20,000 dip reserve, and a value of ₹39,178.86: a simulated loss of ₹821.14, or 2.05%. That reserve is part of the account total; it is not all money put into shares. Different contribution dates and risk levels make quick league-table comparisons unreliable.
Aishwarya: I have named the loss “Tuition Fees.”
Pooja: Please do not book it as a business expense.
Govind: My balanced account is doing better than some aggressive accounts.
Teressa: For a few days. Enjoy your victory speech, but keep the receipt.
The regular schedules continue. The dip trio—Govind, Nithin and Aishwarya—also have reserve rules. A falling market alone does not approve an extra purchase: the trigger, valuation, market, data and investment checks still have to pass. The panels also explain the selected agents’ year-end bonus or salary-hike assumptions. More pretend cash does not, by itself, mean better investment performance.
2. Red screens, with a few important footnotes
Aswin arrived with the market briefing and the expression of a man who had checked his screen before drinking tea.
Aswin: India is under pressure, and several major global markets are softer too. But “the whole world is down” would be too broad.
Rahul: Can I say “most of my watchlist is personally attacking me”?
Teressa: That is a feeling. Label it correctly.
| Market in VilfinTV’s snapshot | Reported latest daily move | Simple reading |
|---|---|---|
| India · Nifty 50 | −0.39% | A weaker session; not proof that every Indian company fell. |
| US · S&P 500 | −0.52% | US large-cap shares were softer. |
| Japan · Nikkei 225 | −0.34% | Another major market under pressure. |
| Europe · STOXX 50 | −0.31% | European large caps also softened. |
| China · SSE Composite | +0.89% | A reminder that regions can move in different directions. |
Source: VilfinTV’s public market snapshot, refreshed 24 October at 23:32 UTC (25 October in Asia). These are the feed’s reported daily moves, not weekly returns or Sunday trading. It does not provide a separate session timestamp for every quote; confirm exchange dates and prices before use.
The loaded Market Sentiment page showed a score of 25, “Bullish Leaning / Neutral,” dated 24 October, even though its equity-momentum check had all three tracked indices below their 50-day averages. That is possible because the score combines several signals. A mixed overall score and a red stock-market session can exist together.
Oil, the rupee, bond yields, company earnings and valuations all deserve attention. They can affect costs, money flows and what investors are willing to pay. None gives us a reliable date for the next recovery. Nor does a lower P/E make a fund automatically safe.
Nithin: So, a dashboard gives context, not tomorrow’s answer key.
Sooraj: Correct. If it knew tomorrow, Rahul would already have asked it for the lottery numbers.
3. The gold slot says: “Please use another door”
The first real plot twist was a purchase restriction. Several Indian gold ETF fund-of-funds have paused fresh investments or new systematic registrations. A FoF is a mutual fund that invests in another fund—in this case, a gold ETF.
For a verified example, HDFC’s official notice dated 15 October restricts fresh subscriptions, switch-ins and new systematic registrations in its two named schemes after that day’s cut-off. It says previously registered systematic transactions continue and redemptions remain available. Check each scheme’s own notice: this is not a statement that every gold product or every existing SIP has stopped.
Sanal: Gold is closed? Even gold has an out-of-office reply now?
Vishnu: Fresh subscriptions in affected schemes are restricted. Existing holdings have not vanished.
Fathima: And a gold ETF bought on an exchange is a different route. Price, liquidity and the premium to its asset value still matter.
Arjun: The agent allocation needs a permitted alternative while the affected gold route is unavailable. We follow eligibility, not nostalgia.
For the agents, that means checking whether the planned gold purchase is actually permitted, whether the minimum purchase is met and whether an eligible alternative fits the model. The records include corrected historical allocations where an unavailable purchase had to be replaced. A substitute may have different risks, tax treatment and gold exposure; it should not be presented as an identical gold holding. An AMC reopening the scheme would trigger another check, not an automatic promise to switch back.
Readers can now filter the Mutual Fund Screener by Open for investment, Accepting SIPs, or Paused for fresh investment. That small label can save a lot of confusion before placing an order.
4. While the agents argued, the tools got an upgrade
Arun turned his monitor around. “Before we debate the universe, can we please appreciate the new pages?” For once, nobody asked for a spreadsheet first.
The Stories page has had its makeover
The redesigned VilfinTV Stories library opens with a cinematic featured mystery, The Clockmaker’s Missing Minute. Genre buttons lead to detective stories, thrillers, travel, health, comedy, kids’ stories, education, animation and AI & tech. Readers can sort the library, choose a theme and use the chapter reader’s reading-mode, text-size and level controls. Resume reading helps them return to a saved place on the same browser.

Govind: Twelve chapters of mystery. Finally, a longer suspense story than “When will my units arrive?”
Vimal: That mystery already ended on Thursday.
Sanal: Some of us had a strong emotional connection to Refresh.
Mutual funds: find the fund, then understand the fund
The India MF Screener showed 1,703 funds when checked. Explore categories and fund houses, search by name, compare funds, inspect NFOs and check costs, size, risk and purchase status. Popular shortcuts now include Aditya Birla Sun Life Medium Term.
Fund details bring together NAV growth, lump-sum and SIP returns, rolling performance, consistency, risk, portfolio holdings and Factor DNA—the fund’s observed investment style. Portfolio Simulator adds goal, risk and amount choices, with model allocation, risk and score, economy and earnings, market intelligence, and the new institutional-flow view. Return labels matter: SIP XIRR reflects the timing of payments; a fund’s CAGR describes growth between two dates.

FII & DII: who bought, who sold—and over which period?
Open Portfolio Simulator → FII & DII on the MF page. FII/FPI means foreign institutional/portfolio investors; DII means domestic institutions such as mutual funds, banks and insurers. The panel separates purchases, sales and net flows, with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly views.
Its provisional combined-exchange cash-market data for 23 October shows FII/FPI net buying of ₹887.65 crore and DII net buying of ₹3,235.36 crore. Net means buys minus sells. The ownership percentages are a separate quarterly measure, dated 30 June 2026; they are not today’s buying share. Even net institutional buying does not guarantee that the index will rise.

Rahul: Both bought, but the market fell?
Teressa: Other investors trade too. Also, markets are not a two-person WhatsApp group.
Sooraj: Shame. We could have muted one person and solved everything.
India ETFs: better charts, plus a route to TradingView
The India ETF Momentum page showed 355 ETFs. Choose a benchmark and inspect Accelerating, Decelerating, Recovering and Underperforming modes, short/medium/long-term trend chips, returns, risk, costs, liquidity and fund facts. “Accelerating” means improving relative to the selected benchmark; it can still appear beside a negative absolute return.
The trading chart now has 1D, 1W, 1M, 3M, 6M and 1Y ranges. The short ranges use available daily closing observations: 1D compares the latest two closes; 1W covers five sessions. These are not live intraday candles. Use the separate TradingView chart link for NIFTYBEES when you want the external chart and its tools. Market data there may also be delayed.

A new window on Global & US ETFs
The new Global & US ETF Momentum page extends the view beyond India. It showed 175 US-listed ETFs, covering broad markets, sectors, factors, developed and emerging countries, bonds, commodities, real estate and digital assets. “Global” describes investment exposure; it does not mean every exchange-listed ETF worldwide is included.
Choose among eight benchmarks, including the S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Russell 2000, MSCI ACWI, developed ex-US, emerging markets, US aggregate bonds and gold. Explore the rotation map and leaders, then filter by region, role, issuer, trend, liquidity, expense ratio, fund size or track record. Confidence labels and the short/medium/long-term trend chips add context to the momentum mode.

Open an ETF for returns, volatility, drawdown, fund facts and the updated daily-close chart. Here is the SPY detail page and its TradingView chart. Price charts exclude cash dividends; the page’s total-return calculations use dividend reinvestment. They answer different questions, so the numbers need not match.

The Global Portfolio Simulator adds goal-based asset mixes, contribution choices, whole or fractional-share assumptions, selection explanations and historical risk illustrations. Its Simulator Buy panel lets readers follow the global model accounts too. These dollar accounts are separate from the original 40 Indian accounts. The country tax and rules guide covers India, Japan/NISA, US persons and other-country considerations, with FAQs on currency, access and reporting. Availability and tax depend on the investor’s country and broker.
Aswin: Now we can look beyond one market.
Akhil: Excellent. International diversification.
Rohith: Also international paperwork. Do not skip that tab.
Abhinav: The forms have diversified too.
5. Tax harvesting arrives. The instant-refund myth does not.
The agents’ Tax harvesting tab shows the financial year, profile assumptions, realised gains and losses, available exemption, eligible holdings, estimated trading costs, potential benefit and executed harvests. It checks the person across accounts, rather than inventing a separate exemption for each portfolio.
In simple terms, gain harvesting may reset an investment’s cost using an available exemption; loss harvesting may use a permitted realised loss against taxable gains. Selling and buying again can create costs, reset holding periods and trigger other rules. A displayed future saving ceiling is not a refund, cash already earned or a guaranteed saving.

Rahul: My portfolio is red. Can I harvest enough tax to buy the cake?
Vishnu: You need eligible holdings, applicable gains or exemption, and a benefit after costs. A red number is not a coupon.
Jithin: I knew there would be terms and conditions.
Pooja: These accounts started this month. They do not magically have a year of holding history.
The first-week accounts have no long-term equity lots yet. Their records do not claim an executed first-week tax windfall. Resident, NRI and overseas profiles can have different rules; any real transaction needs the investor’s full tax picture, including accounts outside this simulator.
6. John walks in with a folder marked “Ultimate”
Just when the meeting seemed finished, John placed a navy folder on the table. Everyone stopped talking. Even the kettle seemed to lower its voice.
John: I am creating an Ultimate Simulation Folio. Seven-year horizon. High risk. Ambitious return goal.
Rahul: Super aggressive?
John: That is the ambition. It is not permission to buy anything with a rocket in its name.
Fathima: Will you disclose the portfolio to the group?
John: I am not sending my folio around to the other agents. If anyone wants to see it, go and check it directly. The funds and ETFs can change as the rules and evidence change.
Sooraj: A secret portfolio with a public viewing window. Manager-level suspense.
Look for Ultimate Simulation Folio — John below Simulator Buy on the mutual-fund simulator and Indian ETF simulator. Each has a planned ₹20,000 monthly budget; these are separate budgets, not a shared ₹20,000. The published strategy has a seven-year goal, up to five holdings per monthly plan and 50 eligibility checks per candidate. ETF trading costs fit inside its budget.
The published profile labels John Aggressive. “Super aggressive” and “Ultimate” describe his story ambition, not a separate regulatory risk grade. His 16% annualised aspiration is a target, not a forecast or promise. The rules can move to defensive alternatives or cash when eligible investments are unavailable; those choices may return much less.
John’s public records schedule the start for Monday, 26 October 2026. At this article’s 25 October check, both Indian accounts have no executed orders and no actual return history. Strategy, eligibility, risk metrics and historical illustrations can be inspected, but any backtest or historical mix is separate from John’s future live simulation. Seven years still allows serious losses, including a loss near the goal date.
Teressa: So you will not tell us the holdings, but you will let us inspect the evidence?
John: Exactly.
Sreeram: And nobody shares private access credentials.
Rahul: Fine. I will investigate after cake.
Arjun: For once, that is a reasonable order of work.
7. The second secret was much sweeter
At that exact moment, the lights dimmed. Sreeram stood up. Vimal checked the power. Rahul opened the suspicious box.
Vimal: Please tell me this is a party and not an outage.
Arun: Relax. Planned lighting change.
Everyone: Happy birthday, Vilfin George!
25 October is the birthday of VilfinTV’s CEO and owner, Vilfin George. In our newsroom story, that called for a big party this week: gold balloons, tea, a proper cake and one celebration that did not depend on a green market.
John had brought a card. Then Arjun brought one. Then everyone else did. Fathima called it “a diversified portfolio of birthday wishes.” For once, nobody objected.

Here are their individual cards—one from every member of the cast, with their own wish for the year ahead.

Vishnu: Equal slices.
John: Risk-adjusted slices.
Sooraj: No. Cake-adjusted happiness. Give me the corner piece.
8. The best long-term habit is rather quiet
When the laughter settled, Arjun put the marker down. The first week had delivered exactly what a learning simulator should: waiting, charges, a holiday, changing prices, a restricted fund and several opportunities to make a hasty decision.
For long-term wealth building, the useful habits remain simple: choose a goal and a risk level you can live with, keep emergency money separate, diversify, understand costs and taxes, and contribute regularly when your finances allow. Review the plan at sensible intervals. Patience does not mean ignoring a changed goal, an unsuitable investment or a genuine risk.
A SIP does not prevent losses. A seven-year horizon does not guarantee profit. Strong past returns do not promise strong future returns. Discipline helps us follow a suitable plan through uncertainty; it cannot remove market risk.
Arjun: We will keep learning. We will check the data. We will give the plan time.
Rahul: And check the portfolio only once a day?
Arjun: Today, check the birthday cards.
Sooraj: Finally. An investment in happiness with immediate delivery.
The screens were still red. The cake was nearly gone. And for a little while, nobody pressed Refresh.
Keep exploring
